Roof Walkway & Fixed Gantry Inspection

Roof walkways & fixed gantries require regular testing and inspection as they fall under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (P.U.W.E.R) 1998. This must be carried out by a competent person and the findings of this inspection must be recorded.

Generally, roof walkways & fixed gantries are formed from steel or aluminium. Providing access to places of work they are used both internally and externally on rooftops, plants, silos, and the like. Wherever they are located, it is vital to ensure the safety of workers who use them.

When inspecting your site's walkways and gantries, our role is to report any findings in light of current recommendations of good practice. For this, we work to the following British Standards:

  • BS 5395-3:1985 Code of Practice for the design of industrial-type stairs, permanent ladders, and walkways.

  • BS 4592:2006 Industrial type flooring and stair treads. Metal open bar gratings.

As part of the process, our Inspection & Maintenance engineers inspect walkways and fixed gantries, ensuring they are compliant with current legislation. While also checking for items that may present an obvious hazard, such as slips, trips, falls, impact damage, etc. They will check that all fixings are secure and that all moving parts operate correctly. We allocate each item a unique reference number, tag the item identifying the next inspection due date, and provide you with a report with our findings.

PUWER regulation 6 specifies the circumstances where inspection is required to ensure healthy and safe conditions are maintained: one circumstance identified is… where work equipment is exposed to conditions causing deterioration liable to result in dangerous situations. Given walkways and fixed gantries are often located external to a building or at height – they can often require a regular planned inspection.

The inspection required under PUWER can take the form of a regular visual inspection carried out by a competent person. In the event that an independent third party is required to undertake this inspection, Eurosafe can take on the role of the competent person.

This provides you with complete peace of mind that the walkways and fixed gantries are fully compliant and that safety is being maximised.
